Still Life Project

I chose my Mamiya RB67 to shoot in the three different scenario. The first scenario was to replicate a dutch still life, the second was to make an advertisement and the third was to make a product shot where you make the object look as nice as possible.

Culture of 120 film – Dutch Still Life

I wanted to show how expensive film can be in 2020 by rolling up a 10 ten dollar bill in with the paper backing of a 120 film roll. I also wanted to show the variety in the types of medium format camera systems a photographer has at their disposal by including the Rolleicord TLR. In making this still life I had trouble figuring out where and how to place the grey sheet.

I included the digital light meter to persuade the viewer to shoot with the Mamiya RB67 in the digital age because in the digital age you have access to more accurate tools to help you nail your exposures on film. I also included the extra Mamiya lens to advertise the system’s modularity which is one of the RB67’s main selling points. This photo was an absolute nightmare to light and never again will I photograph such dark objects on a black background. Black objects absorb all the light and the only way to get detail and texture information is through direct reflection. I ended up compositing multiple images to get the detail I wanted in each object.

Mamiya RB67 – Product

I used a white sheet as the seamless background and left the wrinkles in to give context to where the camera in the space. I did not want the background to be pure white because that would make it look like the camera is floating in a empty void of white space like you see in movies and cartoons.
